Official Statement and Action on Social Justice Issues

Dear Scholarship Prep Community:

Never in our lifetime has our nation dealt with a confluence of challenges similar to what we face today. The devastating, unjust killing of George Floyd, for all of the world to see, has sent shockwaves throughout our nation. People across the world continue to grapple with the multi-layered impact of a global pandemic that may have longitudinal negative effects we still have yet to uncover. Yet, this is the time for all of us to come together, as one, in love, empathy, and understanding, despite these monumental obstacles. We are disgusted by the unnecessary pain caused to our Black community while we mourn the preventable death of Mr. Floyd. Families are hurting, communities are shaken, and our children are watching what we do next.

We applaud those individuals who have worked tirelessly to raise awareness and continue to shed light on the institutional realities faced by many in our communities. We must be unified as allies and champion equity, reform, and freedom without conditions. In the words of the great Maya Angelou, “Love recognizes no barriers. It jumps hurdles, leaps fences, penetrates walls to arrive at its destination full of hope.” Let’s show our children that change is possible and hope for a better future for all is not just a dream.

We are here to listen, to support, to continue feeding our families, and to be an agent of change in our fight for equality.

Given recent national events surround social justice, racism, and reform, we are announcing our Listen. Learn. Lead. Social Justice Speaker Series. This speaker series aims to guide all Scholarship Prep staff towards better understanding the plight, frustrations, and needs of our most vulnerable groups. These speaker series talks are private events intended for our staff members to have ongoing dialogue around how to best support students and families
